School holidays are here!

“I’m bored, I have nothing to do.”

Have you ever spoken these words? I will be honest, I have, and even my children have uttered these words. School holidays have arrived, and I’m excited. Are you? Or are you dreading them, because you think you will have nothing to do? Shall we have a look at what we can do, instead of focusing on what we can’t? Let's think about this together.

Definition of Bored:

Feeling weary and impatient because one is unoccupied or lacks interest in one's current activity. "She got bored staring out of the window."

I actually enjoy looking out my windows and enjoying God’s creation outside. I have two beautiful doves that hang around our garden. One day while working at my kitchen table I looked up and there were three doves all watching me work. It just looked hilarious. I wondered what they were thinking.

Let's see what activities we can come up with to keep us from saying those words. Some of you may be going on a holiday away from your home. That's exciting for you! What things can you take with you to not be bored? Well, ask yourself,  what do I enjoy doing?

  • Reading - take some books to read

  • Art, drawing, colouring - take some of your art supplies

  • Listening to music - maybe you could write your own lyrics

  • Board/card games - you can all join in or you can have games just for you

  • Photography - take photos of your getaway and surrounds

There are five suggestions, and I am sure you can think of more. Talk to your parents or carers to see what else they can think of, and of course what is realistic to take on your holiday. The same goes if you are staying home - what is there that you can be doing to avoid saying those words? Let’s have a look, shall we?

  • Reading - you could even start your own story

  • Art - drawing, colouring or creating

  • Listening to music - maybe you could write your own lyrics

  • Board/card games - you can all join in or you can have games just for you

  • Jigsaw puzzles

  • Lego

  • Photography - take photos of your surrounds

  • Playing with your pet - even cleaning out where they live/sleep?

  • Helping with chores around the house

  • Cleaning your bedroom

Again, talk to your parents or carers and see what else you can think up together. There are many things you can do around our beautiful town or where you live - parks, beaches etc. Sometimes the museums even have free events for students over the holidays.

Maybe, just maybe you could play a game where every time you say “I’m bored”, your parents or carers give you a job to do. What do you think? Remember in Philippians 2:14 it says: Do everything without grumbling or arguing.

Enjoy your holidays, and be safe and blessed! We look forward to hearing what you got up to over the break.

Numbers 6:24-26: The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; the Lord turn his face toward you and give you peace.
