Student Spotlight - Jeffrey Shield

Jeffrey Shield, a gifted and talented 10-year-old pianist from Perth, Western Australia, began his musical journey at 6.5 years old. Now, he is studying Year 6 at ACC Southlands through Distance Education. At the YSL Music School in Perth, Jeffrey is pursuing advanced diploma-level studies in piano performance. He sat the LTCL (Licentiate Trinity College London Piano Recital Diploma) exam this month and passed with distinction, further enhancing his impressive musical resume. The LTCL diploma is recognised as equivalent to the final year recital of an undergraduate degree.
By the age of 9, Jeffrey had already passed the ATCL piano performance diploma exam from Trinity College London with distinction. Over the past four years, his dedication to the piano has earned him an outstanding total of over 35 prizes across various competitions and many special awards. He has received the top Grand Prize and special awards at the 2nd International Paderewski’s Piano Competition for Children and Youth in Poland and secured 4th Prize at the prestigious 31st International Fryderyk Chopin Piano Competition for Children and Youth in Szafarnia, Poland, proudly representing Australia.

In addition, Jeffrey has won first place in several local Australian piano competitions, including the Fremantle Eisteddfod, West Australian Pianist Competition (WAPC), North of Perth Music Festival, South Suburban Music Society Eisteddfod (Perth WA), Fastest Learner Competition of 2023 and 2024, Steinways National Piano Competition, and Ashdale Got Talent 2022. He recently won 1st Prize in the WPTA Spain International Piano Competition 2024 and was also awarded the special prize for Best Performance of Work of Contemporary Composer.
Notably and recently, Jeffrey won 1st Prize with a full 100 marks in the Licentiate Diploma Level Baroque/Classical category, many 1st Prizes and Junior Christopher Latham Awards at the South Suburban Music Society Eisteddfod 2024 competitions. Jeffrey’s talent has also shone on some of the most prominent stages. In 2022, he performed for former Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison in Perth, and in 2023, he performed at the WAGSMS concert at the Crown Theatre, which attracted an audience of over 2,000 people. In 2024, he embarked on a multi-city concert tour in Poland, captivating both local and international audiences.
