From August 22nd – 29th, our Year 8 students embarked on an exciting and enriching trip to Sydney and Canberra. This week-long adventure combined hands-on learning with unforgettable experiences, giving students the chance to deepen their understanding of Australia’s culture, history, and democracy.

In Sydney, students enjoyed some of the city’s most iconic attractions. Highlights included visiting the world-famous Sydney Opera House, walking near the Harbour Bridge, exploring the serene Botanical Gardens, and spending a day at Taronga Zoo, where they observed Australia’s unique wildlife up close.

The journey continued in Canberra, where students gained a deeper appreciation for Australia’s national institutions. At the Australian Institute of Sport, students toured state-of-the-art facilities—guided by some impressively tall volleyball players! They also explored the newly renovated wings of the Australian War Memorial, honouring the service of Australia’s veterans.

A major highlight was a visit to Parliament House, where students participated in a lively mock parliament, debating and passing a bill. They also had the privilege of meeting Rick Wilson, the Member for O’Connor. Students learned more about Australia’s democratic history at the Museum of Australian Democracy and discovered the voting process at the Electoral Education Centre, preparing them to be informed and active future voters. The group also took time to enjoy the outdoors at the beautiful National Arboretum, connecting with nature in the heart of the capital.

Beyond the excursions, the trip provided rich opportunities for students to grow socially and personally. They built stronger friendships with their peers, forged new connections with students from other schools staying at the same accommodation, and developed independence and resilience. Even when faced with some flight delays on the return journey, our students rose to the occasion with maturity and flexibility.

Although this trip represents an expense for families, it is significantly offset through the support of the Australian Government’s PACER program, which contributes $1,275.00 per student toward the cost of the experience.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to the parents who prepared their children so well for this adventure, and to the staff who generously gave their time to accompany the group. The trip was truly a memorable and transformative experience for all involved.
