Strengths and Challenges

As we head into NAPLAN assessment time, it is a good reminder that we all have different strengths and challenges in our lives. Each of us is unique and creative, and the Bible tells us we are made in the image of God. Sometimes, the very things we find difficult are what shape our character and bring out the best in us for the future.

If your child feels anxious about the NAPLAN tests, encourage them to simply do their best - they cannot fail! Keep a matter-of-fact attitude about the process. While encouragement is important, treating NAPLAN just the same as any quiz or assessment helps reduce stress. These tests are designed not only to provide a snapshot of student progress but also to assess our teaching and the effectiveness of our programs. They do not determine a child’s future success or potential. We use a variety of assessments, including NAPLAN, to measure progress and allocate final grades.

If your child feels anxiety, reassure them that you are proud of them for giving it a go. Understanding the source of their worries can help you support them effectively. Practising some strategies in advance - such as deep breathing, focusing on their senses, counting, taking a sip of water, or shaking out stress - can make a difference. If they become overwhelmed during the test, let their teacher know. Rest assured, your child will not see or be seen by others on the screen.

Every child has unique gifts and is developing in their own way. Maybe they have a fantastic imagination, build impressive LEGO structures, hula-hoop for ages, recently learnt to tie their shoelaces, made a new friend, invented a game, caught their first fish, were kind, brave or generous, or earnt an achievement badge. Others may still be working on a skill - practicing, refining techniques, persisting through challenges, developing patience, or engaging in therapy or professional support. Wherever they are on their journey - taking big steps or small steps, we love celebrating their growth and achievements. Please encourage your child to share with their teacher so we can feature them here in our Newsletter, or congratulate them within their class teleconferences.

Jeffrey Shield has recently joined us to study with ACC Distance Education. He loves piano and has worked hard to hone his talent and reach this current level of skill. We hope you enjoy finding out a little more about him in the article here.
